When looking at pure talent in a defensive back prospect, Lakewood St. Edward's Michael Dowell stands out among the 2018 football players in the state of Ohio.
The younger brother of Michigan State players Andrew and David Dowell, Michael has the same type of skill set as his brothers and that has led to significant offers.
"My three latest offers are from Iowa, Cincinnati and Minnesota," Dowell stated. "Coach (Phil) Parker had been talking to me for a while, and he just wanted to make sure I was open in my recruitment before offering. With my brothers at Michigan State, a lot of people think I'm either committed there, or going to, and that's not the case right now at all."
"Iowa has a great program, and I know they produce great defensive backs," he said. "My mom is from Iowa, and we have family there, so I'm going to visit there. It was the same thing with Cincinnati, and they thought I was committed also. When they realized I was still open, they were happy to offer me. I'm interested in them for sure."
"Minnesota is the latest school to offer and (head coach) P.J. Fleck just direct-messaged me out of the blue," he added. "Coach Fleck asked me if I was interested in MInnesota, and I told him I was. I got on the phone with the defensive backs coach (Maurice Linquist) and they went ahead and offered me."
So what about the Spartans? Where does Michigan State stand with Dowell?
"I'm definitely open to all schools, and I want to learn about all of them," he admitted. "With Michigan State, I really do like the program a lot. I'm going to get back up there again soon for a visit. Not just for the football stuff, but I do want to see Coach (Mark) Dantonio and the coaches."
"I definitely have them high on my list, but before I make any decision I want to investigate every option I have, and visit every school that I'm interested in," Dowell noted. "I don't have a certain time to make my choice, and that will come when i know I've found the right school."
