Modesto (Calif.) Downey athlete Isaiah Johnson (6-3, 205) had January end in a big way for him.

The three-star landed his first offer, from UCLA, the week before National Signing Day and it was a huge relief for Johnson.

"The UCLA offer meant a lot to me and my family," said Johnson.  "It made me appreciate the work that I'd been doing to get to this level."

Johnson said he was expecting the offer from the Bruins since linebackers coach Scott White had been recruiting him and hinting an offer was close.

"It wasn't too big of a surprise because they said that they wanted to offer me some time in January," said Johnson.  "Coach White offered me as an outside linebacker."

Most schools like Johnson as a receiver, but the Downey prospect is similar to former Army All-American Curtis Robinson, now at Stanford, who played receiver mostly as a junior before blossoming into one of the premier linebackers in the country.  And Johnson is ok to play on either side of the ball.

Johnson said he'll visit UCLA in March and the Bruins are on his short list.

"My top schools right now are UCLA, Notre DameCalifornia and Oregon," said Johnson.

Johnson said a number of other schools have been in contact and he thinks more offers will be coming in.

"Notre Dame, Cal, Oregon, Oregon StateWashingtonWashington StateIdahoColoradoPurdueArizona State and Fresno State are all schools I'm hearing from," said Johnson.

Johnson said he's planning to do a number of camps this spring, including a return to the Opening Oakland regional.
