Midwest DB Gregory Newsome heating up on the recruiting trail with a cut-down in sight

WINDERMERE, Fla. -- The top team over the weekend at the adidas 7v7 East Regional was out of Chicago, Midwest Boom. One of the top defenders on the roster, Greg Newsome, is just as hot on the recruiting trail.

Gregory Newsome was among the talkers over the weekend at the adidas 7v7 East Regional in central Florida, and he was among those to back it up on the Midwest Boom roster.

The Carol Stream (Ill.) Glenbard North standout, currently a Scout three-star defensive back prospect, helped the squad to a championship crown at the event before taking another title at a different event on Sunday.

Newsome's recruitment has taken off in the process.

"Recruitment is going great, I received a lot of Power 5 offers after our Boom Showcase and they've had a lot of time to evaluate my film, so they said they really liked it," he said. "I just got Boston College and Vanderbilt

"I know they're (BC) in the ACC, they contacted me on Twitter. It's a smart school, too, that's what I'm looking for in a college. Vanderbilt is SEC, one of the top conferences, they went 6-6 last year and into a bowl game, that's another good thing in a school."

Purdue represents the most recent offer for Newsome, who says he is being projected on the edge at the next level.

"Most colleges, because they said they like long corners, said they want me at corner in college," he said. "Right now, I'm 6-1, 170 pounds."

Armed with earlier offers from Arkansas, Northwestern, Iowa. Illinois and many others, there is a cut-down timeframe in sight in the process of whittling well over a dozen scholarship offers down to a small group of true contenders.

"Probably after Boom season, into the spring and summer," Newsome said. "I'll visit the schools I'm attracted to and I'll narrow it down and slow down recruiting.

"I'm also currently hearing from Wisconsin and Penn State."

The in-state Ilini will host the rising-senior on March 10 before a trip to Northwestern on March 11.
