2018 ATH/TE Tyrick James (Gabe Brooks / SCOUT)

Versatile 3-Star Weapon Tyrick James Picking Up New Power Five Interest

FRISCO, Texas -- Tyrick James, a three-star athlete/tight end from Central Texas, has two FBS offers and has drawn more recent interest, he told Scout at The Opening Dallas.

With offers from Texas State and SMU, 2018 athlete/tight end Tyrick James from China Spring High School near Waco, Texas, has already popped on the radars of FBS -- and even Power Five -- programs.

The three-star prospect enjoyed a productive junior season and now focuses on improving his game this offseason, as well as his concentrating some on his recruitment.

James said he's already attended junior day events at OklahomaTCU, and Baylor. All three programs have told the 6-foot-2, 232-pound James to keep in touch with him this spring. He's also heard from schools such as TexasFlorida, and Syracuse.

New Longhorns running backs coach Stan Drayton has been in touch with James.

"Just wants me to come down there so I can get to know the new coaching staff," said James, who added that Texas wants him as an H-back, the position most programs have expressed interest in him.

James has talked to tight ends coach Greg Nord at Florida, as well as offensive quality control coach Vincent Marshall at Syracuse.

"Coach Nord said he wants me as more of a tight end, blocking," said James, who's added about 20 pounds of good weight since last spring's camp circuit. "Coach Marshall, he said he's been looking at me since my freshman year, since he was at Bowling Green (as a graduate assistant). It'd be H-back at Syracuse."

James' increased recruiting attention is in part a result of his big junior campaign, which saw him catch 55 passes for 614 yards and 11 touchdowns on 11.2 yards per reception.

James was by far the leading receiver for a power spread run game at China Spring, which finished 13-2 and reached the Texas Class 4A Division I state semifinals before losing to eventual champion and perennial powerhouse Carthage.

"I like it," James said of the recruiting process so far. "Just sitting back and waiting (on more offers).
