We caught up with some of the top football prospects in the West region on Sunday at the Opening Regional Camp in Los Angeles on Sunday. Here's the latest recruiting buzz:
Gardena (Calif.) Serra linebacker Merlin Robertson said he’s focusing on five schools right now. BYU is recruiting him hardest with the LSU Tigers, Oklahoma Sooners, Oregon Ducks and USC Trojans all in the mix as well. He has already visited BYU, LSU and USC and will check out the Sooners and Ducks over the summer. He plans to make a summer commitment.
San Diego (Calif.) St. Augustine defensive back Isaac Taylor-Stuart took recent unofficial visits to Cal, Stanford and USC. The Trojans are in a good spot right now but schools like the Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida State Seminoles, Michigan Wolverines, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Oregon and Washington are making a big push as well and he’ll take a handful of visits over the spring/summer.
Mission Viejo (Calif.) defensive back Olaijah Griffin recently visited USC and the Trojans could be tough to beat right now. A few other schools recruiting Griffin heavily right now include Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon and TCU. The corner said he plans to commit at the Under Armour AA Game.
Corona (Calif.) Roosevelt athlete Chase Williams recently visited UCLA and USC and plans to check out several more schools in the spring and summer. His most recent offers are from Arizona State, Georgia and Notre Dame and he has a visit set with the Irish later this month. He’ll also visit Arizona State over Spring Break.
Temecula (Calif.) Chaparral offensive lineman Justin Dedich is up to 19 total scholarship offers and said Colorado, UCLA and Washington are the schools he’s talking with the most. He visited the Bruins on Sunday following The Opening Regional and is hoping to get back out to Boulder and UW later this spring/summer. Stanford is involved and Dedich could camp with the Cardinal as well.
Ontario (Calif.) Colony wide out Michael Ezeike landed an offer on Monday from UCLA and could visit the Bruins as soon as later this week. Fresno State, Oregon State and Washington State are making a big push as well and the athlete is hoping to visit all three later in the spring. Washington would be a dream offer for Ezeike and the receiver said he could make a summer decision.
Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei offensive lineman Chris Murray took a recent visit to UCLA and plans to head back for Spring practice. Murray is also planning to visit Arizona later this month and will visit Washington for the Huskies Junior Day in April. Washington State will also get a visit when Murray is in the NW. Mississippi State and TCU are two more schools recruiting Murray heavily.
West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade running back Andrew Van Buren is up to seven total offers and said Boise State and Nevada are on him hardest. UCLA is a recent offer for Van Buren and he’ll check out the Bruins for Spring Ball. The athlete plans to take his official visits in the fall and said the Broncos and Colorado are two schools he knows he’ll check out.
Temecula (Calif.) Chaparral offensive lineman Steven Jones visited UCLA on Sunday following the Opening Regional Camp in L.A and picked up an offer from the Bruins. Jones is up to 13 scholarship offers and said the schools he’s talking with the most are Arizona State, Colorado, Oregon, TCU and Washington. He has already visited the Huskies twice and will check out Oregon later this Spring. ASU could get a visit later this Spring and Oregon State is a possibility as well.
Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon quarterback Mason Quandt has early offers from Columbia and Cornell and it sounds like UNLV could be close as well. Quandt plans to visit UNLV later this Spring as well as several Ivy League programs who are recruiting him heavily.
Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian linebacker Bo Calvert is a longtime USC commit but the athlete said he would like to take a few visits, both unofficially and officially. Schools still talking with Calvert include Cal, Florida State, Nebraska, Oregon, Stanford and Utah. Stanford and Utah could get visits over the Spring and official visits will go to Nebraska, USC and possibly somewhere in the SEC.
Anaheim (Calif.) Servite sophomore tight end Ethan Rae is up to four offers with UCLA being the most recent school to offer. Oregon State also offered last week and Colorado and Fresno State were the first two to jump on board. Rae said he plans to camp with USC over the summer and is hoping to visit Washington as well. Cal and Utah are also involved and the Bruins could be the team to beat early on as his father James played football in the late 80s for UCLA.
