Michael Furtney

Analysis: Furtney a significant add for UW

Milan (Mich.) offensive tackle Michael Furtney has great upside and Wisconsin, we believe, is just the place for him to capitalize on that.

Bio:
Furtney first came onto our radar at the 2016 Elite Big Man Camp in Wixom when, as a sophomore, he was a top performer at the event. Schools began showing interest shortly after. In September of 2016, Furtney received his first scholarship offer when Eastern Michigan extended one his way. Several MAC offers followed and then he received his first power-five offer from Syracuse in December. Then things took off. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Missouri, Fresno State and UConn all offered in the last week of January and from there, it seemed like he received a new offer almost weekly. His Ivy League offers, like Darmouth and Princeton, speak to what a good student he is as well. On March 14th, Furtney visited Wisconsin for a spring practice and committed to the Badgers.

Scouting Report:
Furtney is an athletic lineman who gets off the ball well, has good overall agility, fluidity and movement skills. He is comfortable in space, balanced and coordinated. He has a leaner frame, but we have seen him thicken up and add good bulk recently which should help him play with even more power as a senior. He is a good finisher who plays to the whistle, but he out-mans his high school opposition a lot of the time, so the increased strength will help him deal with what he will see at the Big Ten level. He is further along as a run blocker than pass protector, so he will have to continue to polish himself in pass pro. He certainly shows the feet and athleticism to be able to do that with added technique. As far as intangibles, we really like the way the kid plays. He is also a very smart, hard-working kid who will be a great locker room guy.

Overall:
Great get for Wisconsin to get a kid who had so many offers but also to beat Big Ten foes like Minnesota and to come in to Michigan and get a kid who had a Michigan State offer. We view Furtney, in comparison to other top Midwestern offensive linemen, as less polished, but with excellent upside. What better place to develop technique and strength than Wisconsin? It is a great match for both sides. This kid is going to get bigger and stronger and retain the athleticism which makes him a special prospect. We could see him possibly playing inside at the next level, but tackle is a possibility too. Either way, we believe he chose an excellent situation for himself as the Badgers will be able to develop his considerable upside.
