Trinity Catholic head coach Cory Patterson has had college recruits come through his program before but maybe not in the numbers he has in the 2019 and 2020 classes
"They really came in and offered our freshmen and sophomores, that's why Illinois and Iowa State were the first two visits we went one, well, we wanted to get to Missouri first too, but Iowa State and Illinois were two of the first schools we wanted to get the
Among those with offers already are
"It was awesome man," Patterson said of the Illini trip. "They treat the guys like they're already there. Thy treat them real good and for a couple of the kids, it was their first time going up, their first visit ever, and they thought it was great."
The Illini signed Catholic lineman Larry Boyd in their 2017 class and have built a good relationship in the school. Patterson says one of the best parts of the trip for his players was the chance to speak with head coach Lovie Smith.
"He sat down and talked to the guys individually. He sat in on a few of them and he just has a very calm demeanor. He doesn't talk a whole lot of ball with the guys, he wants to know what they want to do -- what they want to do after football -- and the degree they want. The guys are not used to hearing that type of stuff. It was a good trip."
At Iowa State, the head coach also stood out.
"It was an awesome, awesome time," Patterson said. "Matt Campbell does a hell of a job. I really like him. Some of the guys really like what they do offensively and they are really turning the corner with the program."
Patterson and his group left Ames with the feeling that the Iowa State program is going to continue making huge strides under Campbell.
"He's young and the vibe he gives off is that he hustles. He is ready to work and they want to win right now. They are not just saying building for the future, they are working to win right away and he was extremely impressive."
St. Louis is loaded in 2018-2020 and Patterson has a lot of that talent. While these young men are a long way from making any decisions, it is clear Iowa State and Illinois will be factors.
