Profile: Durell Nchami

Position: Outside linebacker

High School: Burtonsville (Md.) Paint Branch

Height: 6-2

Weight: 206

Recruiting: Nchami seemed all Maryland after he was offered, and his commitment showed that. He also had Power 5 offers from Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Virginia and Wake Forest.

The Scouting Report: Nchami brings athleticism with burst to Maryland, and what is interesting is how well he performs in pass coverage, which is not common for high school linebackers.

He plays outside linebacker at Paint Branch but shows versatility in blitzing off the edge and, at times, putting his hand on the ground and rushing as a defensive end.

In pass coverage, he is fluid and smooth in a zone. He moves well laterally, reads the play and he gets the proper depth on his drops, which makes it tough for the quarterback to get the ball over him.

When the ball in thrown in front of him, he breaks well and shows good closing speed to get to the receiver.

In the running game, Nchami needs to work on his strength and his leverage before he can be effective at the college level. Make no mistake, though, the talent is there.

Nchami takes on blocks and can disengage, and he uses his length well to corral a ball carrier. Adding strength (upper and lower body) will enable Nchami to be more physical when disengaging from a block, and the lower body strength will make him more flexible to bend and drop his pad level.

The strength will also make him a stronger tackler, but he has to develop the technique and suddenness to tackle through the ball carrier.

Overall Analysis: Nchami's athleticism and frame are a plus and once he gets stronger and works on his run-stopping technique, he will be a very good linebacker for the Terps. His burst and instincts show he has the physical and mental talent to play at a high level.
