Dashaun Jerkins

ACC, SEC programs vying for top-ranked Va. safety Dashaun Jerkins

Woodbridge (Va.) safety Dashaun Jerkins' recruitment continues to surge and he gave Scout the latest.

Dashaun Jerkins' stock continues to rise. The 6-foot, 188-pound Jerkins' scholarship total has reached double digits.

North Carolina has led for months and remains the team to beat.

"They're still my leader," Jerkins said. "When I go to Chapel Hill, I just feel at home and they make feel like family. I also like the atmosphere and coaches. I'll probably visit again sometime this spring.

"(Linebackers) coach (John) Papachis stays in contact and we have a great relationship. He's straightforward and always honest with me. He's been telling me I could make a really big impact at UNC in the future and that I'd fit in really well down there. I also like coach (Larry) Fedora. I think he changed the program around and they've had a lot of success. I think he brings a lot to the table."

Along with North Carolina, Jerkins said Vanderbilt and Wake Forest are showing significant interest, and gave a thought on each.

Vanderbillt: "They've been telling me that they want me to come visit really bad," Jerkins said. "They also stay in contact consistently.

"(Defensive backs) coach (Marc) Mattioli is recruiting me. He's told me I'd have a chance to earn early playing time and that I could really help them out."

Wake Forest: "I like that they've had a lot of DBs go to the NFL.  I also like the coaches because they always stay in touch and ask how I'm doing.

"(Safeties) coach (Lyle) Hemphill is the coach I talk to and he's also straightforward. He constantly checks up and has told me I could do big things there."

Jerkins plans to narrow his list of schools sometime this fall.
