Game-Breaking Tailback Destin Coates Is Nowhere Near the Recruiting Finish Line

With no leaders in his recruitment, three-star running back Destin Coates dishes out the one school likely to receive a visit by the end of spring.

Possessing roughly a dozen scholarship offers, including ones from MississippiIllinoisWake Forest and PurdueDestin Coates is a fast-rising ball carrier expected to have an eventful spring evaluation period.

The 2018 prospect out of Tallahassee (Fla.) Rickards is forever grateful for each of his Division I opportunities, but isn't quite ready to serve up a clear-cut leader to land his coveted commitment.

"To be honest, I really don't have a top school," Coates said. "I'm just taking the recruiting process day-by-day, and talking everything over with my coaches and parents to see which school would be a great fit for me, so I don't have one right now."

A date has yet to be secured, but it won't be long before Coates packs his bags and visits with the lone SEC school to serve up an offer to this point.

"I really like Ole Miss," Coates said. "I'm actually supposed to be taking a visit up there soon to check out the campus to see what it's like.

"They will definitely be one of my top schools when I make a decision."

Recruiting is a lengthy process with prospects earning offers as early as their freshman year, so manufacturing those tight-knit relationships takes time.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Coates needs to continue to educate himself on coach Lovie Smith's program at Illinois, but also has nearly a whole year to do so.

"Me and (running backs) coach (Thad) Ward kind of have a good connection, so I like them too, but I have to find out more about their school to consider them as one of my top schools," Coates said.

"He told me it would be a good fit because he's a great coach that could help me get to the next level if I come there."

With no additional visits scheduled, Coates has no timetable for his decision as well.
