ACC, SEC programs vying for three-star TE James Mitchell

Big Stone Gap (Va.) Union tight end James Mitchell's scholarship total has reached double digits and he spoke with Scout.

James Mitchell has been one of the hottest prospects in Virginia over the past few months.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound tight end has 12 offers, but is not ready to make any major decisions when it comes to his recruitment.

"I don't have any leaders yet," Mitchell said. "I'm probably going to narrow my list down in August. But right now, I'm pretty open, and not sure who will make it."

Although he claims no favorites, he said ClemsonDukeTennessee and Virginia Tech are recruiting him hardest, and he gave a quick thought on each.

Clemson: "I really like coach (Dabo) Swinney and what he's built," Mitchell said. "I also like what they expect from their players."

Duke: "I like what coach (David) Cutcliffe has been able to do with the program and I've gotten really comfortable with their coaching staff."

Tennessee: "I've only visited once, but I was really impressed with the coaching staff and facilities."

Virginia Tech: "I love the atmosphere. I'm also very comfortable with the coaching staff at Virginia Tech."

His next visit will be to Virginia Tech on April 8.

"I already know a lot about that program and the school, so I'm really going back to watch practice and get more in-depth look at the academics," Mitchell said. " I'm also looking forward to spending some time with the coaches."

The Union standout does not have a definitive timeline for his commitment, but knows what he is looking for at the next level.

"The main factors are getting a good education, being surrounded by good teammates, somewhere with a genuine coaching staff, and just fitting in overall," Mitchell said.
