"It's been exciting," Mackie said. "I'm enjoying the journey at St Thomas. Playing under coach Harriott and coach Smith has truly been a blessing.
"I'm looking forward to the upcoming season and the great things that the team is going to accomplish. I'm just going to follow the process and keep working hard."
Coach Terry Bowden and Akron came calling with the first offer prior to the 2016 season, and Appalachian State opted to dive into the mix with an offer of their own just roughly 24 hours ago.
"I don't know that much about the program right now," Mackie said. "I just got the offer (yesterday) morning, so I'm going to have to do some research on them."
Mackie checks in with intriguing size, and does a nice job of reading and reacting in the interior of the defense. He flashes leadership and is an intelligent kid who knows his assignment and does it well.
Mackie is a throwback type of inside linebacker that impresses with the ability to disengage off blockers and put a hat on the football.
"In my opinion, I feel that colleges like my ability to play inside the tackles, read the offense, and make sure tackles at the point of attack," Mackie said.
The up-and-coming prospect says he plans to attend spring games and junior days at both Michigan and Kentucky.
