Tyler Shough was on a boat Wednesday when he received some news that probably made him want to joyfully jump into the water.
The fast-rising quarterback prospect from Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton has been impressive the last few weeks at numerous events, including The Opening Los Angeles and the Pylon 7on7 national championships, and two big offers arrived Wednesday by the way of South Carolina and then Indiana.
"It was almost out of nowhere," Shough told Scout.com. "With South Carolina, coach (Kurt) Roper followed me on Twitter and I gave him a call. We were out on the lake so we stopped so I could call him, and then he handed the phone over to coach (Will) Muschamp who offered me. I didn't really see it coming. It surprised me.
"We talked a little bit about coming out and stuff like that. It was awesome to get to talk to them and I'm looking forward to getting to know them. They told me they like the way the ball comes out of my hand and they know I'm a smart guy, so they wanted to see me read defenses and call protections, things like that."
The 6-foot-5, 195-pound Shough said he intends to see the Gamecocks up close either in April or May, depending on his schedule. The Hoosiers could also be in line to draw a trip.
"I went to the Notre Dame camp in Indiana last summer but I've never been to the Indiana campus," Shough said. "I don't know much but I loved it out there. I'm a big fan of the Midwest. I'm looking forward to getting to know the coaches and getting to the campus maybe. We'll see."
Shough visited Nebraska earlier this month and, though he didn't return home with an offer in hand, he said that was a great experience.
"It was awesome," Shough said. "The weather wasn't as nice as Arizona but it was nice for a change. It was snowing once we got there. The coaches were awesome and it was everything I had hoped it would be and more. Coach (Mike) Riley was super chill and it was great talking to him. I sat down with him a couple times, actually. They weren't really talking about offer wise because they were trying to get to know me more personally. I talked to most of the coaches there and they were very welcoming."
Arizona State, the local school, also drew a visit last weekend and Shough admitted an offer from his childhood favorite Sun Devils would be big in his recruitment.
"I've gotten to know coach (Billy) Napier really well and what really stands out is that it's home," Shough said. "I love Arizona so much and it'd be a blessing to be able to stay here. I grew up a Sun Devils fan so it'd be awesome to play for them as well, so that's always there on my mind. With coach Napier it's kind of clicked. I really enjoy talking to him and I've gotten to know him more."
Shough completed 62 percent of his pass attempts for 2,079 yards and 27 touchdowns in 12 games as a junior last season.
