When Joe Petti picked up an offer from Navy recently, it gave him pause.

The offensive tackle long wanted to go to an academy after graduating from Bronx Fordham Prep, but the chance to play Power 5 football could change his thoughts.

The 6-foot-6, 287-pound Petti visited Rutgers on Thursday, and he will be at Syracuse on Saturday. Connecticut is also showing strong interest as his recruitment begins to pick up steam as the spring evaluation period nears.

However, his with his trip to Rutgers fresh in mind, Petti broke down his long day on the New Jersey campus.

"We sat in the position meetings, so I sat down down with (offensive line) coach (A.J.) Blazek and the offensive line and we just watched and went over all the stuff they were going to do," he said. "I got to see them start their spring practice, and see all their drills and all their formations. I got to see a little bit of their offense.

"It was good. I liked it a lot."

Petti, who also visited campus in late February, got a close look at the practice habits of the Scarlet Knights offensive linemen.

"I wanted to see how the coaches worked with the players," he said. "They want their (experienced) players to coach the other players with them, so it is not just the coach bringing up plays. I also wanted to see how if they mess up, do they start the drill and how they rewind it and go through what you did wrong. Then you do it again so you do it right."

Blazek spent time with Petti, and the two hit it off.

"He's great. He's really energetic," Petti said. "He's really passionate, too, and he really embraces the players. I like him a lot."

So, where do things stand in regards to an offer?

"I have to go to their camp," Petti said. "They said if I can show them (live) what I can do on my film, they could see themselves pulling the trigger pretty quickly."

Meanwhile, the offer from Navy holds high meaning.

"I know a lot about (the academy)," Petti said. "I had a lot of interest in the academies since seventh grade. I've always been attracted to the service, and it's also a great thing to do. There's a lot of comaradie and brotherhood. It's just always been a dream of mine."
