Three-Star RB Richard Newton Talks Washington Offer, Utah Could Be Next

Palmdale (Calif.) running back Richard Newton showed at the recent Opening Regional Camp in L.A a few weeks ago he's one of the top backs in the state. The athlete landed his first offer out of the Pac-12 earlier today.

Richard Newton is a talented athlete and shined at the recent Opening Regional Camp in L.A.

Newton earned a spot on our All Surprise Team and showed he's among the top backs in the region.

At 6-1, 185 pounds, Newton has a long, athletic frame, runs well and has some wiggle to him. He shows up very well on film and had a solid junior season rushing for 1,050 yards and 17 touchdowns. He's a decisive runner who gets up the field and has the speed to run away from a defense.

Newton shows a burst and attacks the line of scrimmage. He's at full speed after just a few strides and can make a cut at full speed while maintaining his balance. He also shows the physicality to run between the tackles,

On the recruiting front, Newton landed his first scholarship offer from the Washington Huskies earlier today.

"My coach called me in to his office and I talked to Coach (Keith) Bhonapha on the phone," Newton said. "I have a real good relationship with Coach B, he has been talking to me since the beginning of my sophomore season. I still didn't see this coming and I was frozen when he told me I had the offer. I was speechless, I really couldn't believe it.

"Coach B always told me I was high on his board so I was hopeful and it felt great to get that first offer in. I'm going to try and get up there next weekend for Junior Day but if I can't make it, I'll visit another time this spring or summer for sure. Washington is my top school right now, No. 1 on my board but I have no plans to make an early commitment, I still want to take my trips."

Newton could be close to landing his second offer, also out of the Pac-12.

"I talked with Utah after I got the UW offer and it sounds like they could be close to offering as well," Newton said. "I talked with the new RB Coach, Kiel McDoanld and he basically told me I had an offer but they just want make sure my transcripts are good and talk with my family. That would be a big offer too and I definitely have interest in Utah as well.

"I'm getting mail from Washington State and I plan to camp with UCLA and USC this summer. I went to an SC Spring practice and attended a UCLA game before and I like both local programs. Notre Dame is another program that I heard could start to recruit me. Like I said, I'm in no hurry to do anything right now. This is the beginning for me and I'm going to play it out and make sure I'm making the best decision for me."
