LSU Adds a Commitment from Scout 300 DE Jarell Cherry

LSU dips back into the Lone Star State to grab a commitment from edge rushing specialist Jarell Cherry.

Jarell Cherry, a 6-foot-3, 229-pound defensive end from Dallas (Texas) Carter made his commitment to play at LSU Saturday night.

Cherry picked the Tigers over a number of major offers such as Alabama, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M, and UCLA.

"This is a very special day for me," Cherry said. "I would like to announce my commitment to LSU."

Cherry plays an odd-front end for Carter High School in Dallas, but will play uncovered in college, whether as a four-man end or an odd-front standing edge rusher. Cherry said head coach Ed Orgeron recruits him for LSU, which likes him as that hybrid prospect who can play as an even-front end or odd-front outside linebacker.

Scout Evaluation: Jarell Cherry is an athletic edge rusher prospect who could potentially play an even-front end or odd-front hybrid outside linebacker at the Power Five conference level. Cherry has primarily played an odd-front end covered up in high school, but he will be at home as a true edge defender in college. Cherry's atheticism also means that there's a chance he could play an outside linebacker position in a 4-3 defense. He's a sprinter during track season and his natural athleticism is one of his best attributes as a prospect. He'll need to add bulk and strength, but possesses the frame to do so. He's also very raw technically, but that means his ceiling should be high as he projects to the next level. Cherry is a high-major prospect who will have plenty of big offers nationally. -- Gabe Brooks

As a junior, Cherry recorded eight tackles for loss and five sacks primarily playing defensive end earning he 6-4A Defensive Line MVP honors.

It is April Fools' Day, but Tiger Blitz publisher Billy Embody also confirmed the commitment news.
