3-Star Offensive Tackle Jake Syptak Recaps SMU Visit

Jake Syptak, a top-10 offensive tackle in Texas for 2018, recaps his weekend visit to SMU.

This past weekend marked the first visit for 2018 three-star offensive tackle Jake Syptak to SMU, which offered the 6-foot-5, 264-pounder in late February.

Syptak, a standout lineman for Texas Class 6A power The Woodlands High School outside of Houston, holds more than a dozen offers, including eight FBS programs and seven Ivy League programs. In addition to SMU, Syptak owns FBS offers from Bowling Green, North Texas, Rice, Texas State, Tulsa, UTSA, and Army.

Syptak came away from the SMU visit with high marks for the Mustangs.

"That was my first trip to SMU. I had a really good time and really like the staff there," Syptak said. "I thought they were very genuine people. I loved the campus as well. Very well-kept and nice."

Offensive line coach Dustin Fry recruits Syptak for the Mustangs. He also got some face time with head coach Chad Morris.

"I got to tour with coach Fry, who took me and my family personally around the campus," Syptak said. "I also spent about an hour talking to coach Morris, who was awesome, and it really stood out to me that he took the time to do that."

Syptak owns a good frame for the tackle position and projects well physically because he will be able to add positive bulk in a college weight-training program.

That attribute stands out to SMU's staff, Syptak said.

"They said I had a high ceiling in pass pro and really liked my run game," Syptak said. "Said I'd be great for their fast-tempo offense. They said I'd probably be a tackle in their system."

Next up for Syptak? He plans to visit UCLA this weekend.

As a junior this past fall, Syptak started at right tackle for a The Woodlands squad that finished 15-1 with its lone loss coming in the Texas Class 6A Division I state championship game.
