Breaking Down the Top 10 Highest Rated Cornerbacks in the Midlands Region

Who are the highest rated cornerbacks in the Midlands region before the spring evaluation period hits? Scout takes a closer examination.

The Top Five

1. Anthony Cook, Houston (Texas) Lamar

HT: 6'0 | WT: 168

This is what a cover corner is supposed to look like. He not only has the hips and build of an elite level island corner Cook also has plus size at the position at around 6’0, a true rare combination of skills. He is still a bit skinny but is starting to really blow up frame wise as well and that has helped him catch the eye of pretty much every top program in the nation. He plays against good competition and comes from a program that has been known to produce some of the best defensive backs in the state and has competed strongly at every major camp event on the national level in the off-season, proving he matches up well with receivers who are already bigger and stronger. Cook is considering offers from schools like ClemsonLSUOhio StateTCUTexasTexas A&M and many more.

2. Jalen Green, Houston (Texas) Heights

HT: 6'1 | WT: 170

Green is a physical corner who is not afraid to come up and press the action with receivers at the line of scrimmage. Green has good size and speed. He is pretty big already physically so he can take on or match up with the big-bodied type of wide receivers. We like the confidence that he plays with and that will only grow as his experience on the field grows. He will continue to work on his technique and breaks to become quicker and play a bit cleaner with his aggressive style. His ability to run and change direction combined with size and physicality are what makes him a high level recruit. A national offer list that features schools like Clemson, LSU, Penn State and Texas among others.

3. D'Shawn Jamison, Houston (Texas) Lamar

HT: 5'10 | WT: 173

Sound tackler who will both wrap up and provide the big hit. Outstanding athleticism with laser-verified 4.48 speed in the 40, a blistering 3.90-second shuttle, and an almost 37-inch vertical. Good pass-rusher in blitzing situations. Excellent closing speed in downhill pursuit as well as chase-and-tackle situations. Jamison has a lot of potential thanks to rare athleticism and a willingness to mix it up with anybody. He will be a Power Five-caliber recruit and possibly one of the top DB's in TXHSFB. Top 10 of DukeFlorida, Michigan, MississippiMissouri, Penn State, TCU, Tennessee, Texas, and USC

4. Kelvin Joseph, Baton Rouge (La.) Scotlandville Magnet

HT: 6'0 | WT: 182

A versatile defensive back prospect who could definitely play high-major college football at cornerback or safety. Joseph is a long-framed, long-striding DB who can cover a lot of territory quickly. He shows good instincts and coverage awareness, and he can turn his takeaways into points with his athleticism. Joseph is wiry strong and possesses ample space for bulk addition in college. He closes fast and hard against the run. He can provide the big hit, but can also improve his technique consistency. He is committed to LSU.

5. Gemon Green, DeSoto (Texas)

HT: 6'2 | WT: 165

If you are looking with a cornerback with plus size and the ability to lockdown the opposition's No.  target, the Green is a who is battle tested doing just that week in and week out. He also faces the best competition in practice each and every day as DeSoto sent multiple receiver to the P5 level. He is good playing close to the line of scrimmage with his long arms and physical style of play or he can drop back and be an effective zone-style defensive back. He reacts quickly and can make plays on the ball. He is more of a coverage guy, but does have the size to be an effective tackler. Green has offers from BaylorColoradoHoustonMichiganOklahomaOklahoma State and Texas.
