Issaiah Johnson is one of the state's top linebackers and is a player we've been hearing about since he was just a freshman.
Johnson is currently rated the No. 7 inside 'backer in the region but could play on the outside as well. We like him as an inside guy as his frame, toughness and strength at the point of attack translates well to the next level. He has the athleticism to make tackles from sideline to sideline and looks comfortable dropping back in to coverage as well.
On the recruiting front, Johnson is up to four total offers with Colorado State being his most recent. Arizona, Dartmouth and San Jose State have all offered as well. The offer from the Wildcats came on a recent unofficial visit last month.
"I had a great visit out there, I liked it a lot," Johnson said. "The coaches are straight up with you and I got to meet the whole defensive staff as well as some of the offensive staff too. I enjoyed talking to Coach (Rich) Rodriguez as well, that whole staff is very impressive.
"I was able to tour the campus and liked it there a lot. Coach Rodriguez is the one who made the offer. We were sitting in his office talking and towards of the end of the conversation, he told me I have a full ride scholarship there to the University of Arizona. Man I was so happy I could't keep a straight face the rest of the time I was there."
Johnson said the thought of making a quick decision did enter his mind.
"When I first got the offer, I was thinking about jumping on it," Johnson said. "I decided I want to play things out a little more and make sure I'm not rushing anything. Colorado State is recruiting me really hard, probably the hardest right now and I want to get out there for a visit.
"The Spring Game is on April 22nd and I'm going to try and visit that weekend. I'm still doing research on the program and learning more about them but I'm very interested. I like the staff and they're telling me I'll have a shot to come in and play as a freshman and they have spots open at inside and outside 'backer so I'm definitely interested."
Johnson said a few other schools he's hearing from include Pac-12 programs Arizona State, Cal, Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA, Washington and Washington State plus Boston College, Utah State, Virginia and several Ivy League programs.
