Elite programs vying for nation's second-ranked ILB Dax Hollifield

Four-star Shelby (N.C.) inside linebacker Dax Hollifield picked up several big offers recently and spoke with Scout about his recruitment.

Several new schools have offered Dax Hollifield recently and he continues to be one of the most sought-after linebackers in the country.

He visited Florida last Saturday.

"It's a great program and I loved the visit," Hollifield said. "I was able to see and do everything. I was there from 10 a.m. until about 11 p.m. I toured campus, saw the classrooms, ate and talked to all the coaches. I also really enjoyed talking and hanging out with the players. They made me feel at home. The visit has a huge impact and Florida is definitely in the mix.

"I spent the most time with (linebackers) coach (Tim) Skipper and (assistant) coach (Mark) DeBastiani. The coaches said they really liked me and made me feel like they need me. I got along with them really well. I think I'd fit really well in the program and I'm also excited about the new facilities they're building.

"I also talked to coach (Jim) McElwain one-on-one and he told me they needed linebackers. He also said they're building something really special at Florida. He's a great guy and a family man. He's awesome. I'll go back and see a game during the season. I'll definitely take an official visit, too."

Hollifield released a top nine in February, but has since taken a step back.

"All the schools are still in the mix, but I'm reevaluating my recruitment," Hollifield said. "I really wide open at this point. I've picked up some big-time offers and everyone is recruiting me hard, so I'm looking at all my options."

The Shelby standout's next stop will likely be LSU sometime in the next few weeks.

"It's great program and they win a lot, so I'm excited about the trip," Hollifield said. "I want to see how I'd fit in and look at the depth chart. I also want to get an overall feel for the school and learn more about the program.

"I love coach (Ed) Orgeron and (defensive coordinator) coach (Dave) Aranda -- they're awesome. They both stay in touch with me all the time. It feels great to have multiple coaches from the same school recruiting me. It shows they really want me."

As for other upcoming visits, Hollifield will take a trip to Alabama soon and Stanford this summer. After the Stanford visit, he will likely narrow his list to five schools.

Hollifield finished last season with 146 tackles, including 52 for loss and 18 sacks, an interception, two pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.
