Miami and Florida pulling away for Derick Hunter. The 2019 athlete visited both schools this past weekend.

Derick Hunter has two schools on top. Although the Dunbar athlete is hearing from everyone both Miami and Florida are the two schools ahead. The 2019 prospect visited both schools recently.

Derick Hunter has two schools at the top of the list.

"Florida and Miami are my top two schools," said the 2019 Dunbar athlete, who is also being recruited by Oregon, Maryland, Notre Dame, and Iowa State.

The Fort Myers visited both schools this past weekend to see how the Gators and the Canes compare. His first stop was to Gainesville, where Hunter saw Jim McElwain and his men in action in the Orange and Blue Debut Spring game.

"It was perfect," he said about his visit to The Swamp," he said. "I loved the atmosphere and everything."

The fans provided the atmosphere, while the players provided the attitude that left an impression.

"The aggressiveness [stood out from the game]  They gave it 100 percent every play," he explained. "The defense also stands out. The defensive backs always stand out at Florida, but the defensive line I can tell that the pass rush is way better than it used to be. Everything is changing. I can see Florida playing in a national championship probably next season."

During his visit with the Gators, Hunter received the full court press from offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier, as well as McElwain.

Their message was, "I'm going to be a Gator," he laughed.

According to Hunter, Florida is recruiting him for both sides of the ball - seeing his potential at tight end and on the defensive line. Although that is certainly a positive for Hunter, that is not the reason why he keeps returning to Gainesville to check in on UF.

"The only school offering both sides, but t really doesn't matter. It just feels like home when I'm there. I know exactly where to go, where the coaches' offices are and everything."

On Saturday, Hunter journeyed down to Coral Gables to check in on the Hurricanes - another school he says feels like home.

"Miami trip went good," he said. "I got to chill with all the players and the incoming players and meeting some more players in my class. Every play the went 100%. Then I had talked with [defensive line]  coach Kool [Craig Kuligowski] and [defensive coordinator] Manny Diaz I just see the program going in the right direction with them two."

Both coaches had their own message.

"They were just asking me, can I see myself fitting in their defense, and  I said yes it's the kind of defense I'll love to play for."

Hunter says both schools provide him with that home feeling, however, he still has some questions about the directions of the programs.

"Miami is a dream school," he said.  "I want to see a change there. I want to see a program changing things around. With Mac [McElwain] I can see Florida is in the right hands and the program is changing. I just want to see if Miami can change. I want to go somewhere we are going to win. If I go to Florida you know you are going to win. Also same thing with Miami but still want to see."

Hunter plans to early enroll, so every visit he takes is helping him work towards a decision. The 2019 prospect admits his decision could happen "pretty quick," but he is not naming an exact timeline.
