New Tennessee OG commit Oliver Lane will bring aggressiveness, athleticism and strength

Corryton (Tenn.) Gibbs offensive guard Oliver Lane committed to Tennessee yesterday, and Scout takes a look at what the Volunteers are getting, and how he fits into their 2018 recruiting class.

Tennessee picked up a big commitment from in-state offensive lineman Oliver Lane Wednesday.

Rated: He is a three-star prospect, 10th-ranked offensive guard in the South Region and No. 30 in the country.

Scouting Report:  There is a lot to like about Lane.

First, he has good size and strength. Lane gets off the ball quickly, is powerful at the point of attack and very aggressive. He shows good balance and flexibility. The Gibbs' standout is also very athletic and can get to the second level with ease when needed.

Lane is a punishing run blocker and simply overwhelms most of his high school opponents. He is solid in pass protection, but definitely has room to grow. He also always plays hard and until the whistle blows.

There are areas where he can improve. Lane needs to continue to work on his pad level as he can play too high at times. He also needs to continue to refine his technique.

Neither is a major concern, and once he gets college coaching in Knoxville, Lane will likely improve immediately.

Final Thought: Lane is a great addition to Tennessee's 2018 recruiting class.

Recruiting the state well is obviously pivotal to the Volunteers' success and all three of Tennessee's commits are in-state prospects.

Lane joins four-star offensive tackle Cade Mays and four-star athlete Alontae Taylor. With three of state's top players in the fold already, it gives Tennessee a lot of momentum going into the spring evaluation period.

Ideally, it would benefit Lane to redshirt next fall. It would give him time to adjust to the college game and allow him to compete for significant playing time the following year. However, he is very talented and it may be hard to keep him off the field as a true freshman.

Regardless, he is a prospect with a lot of natural ability and big upside. If he stays healthy and continues to develop, he could become a very good player in the SEC.
