Tyrese Allen

Analysis: Mountaineers add athletic DT Tyrese Allen

Not many high school defensive tackle prospects can do the things Paintsville (Ky.) junior Tyrese Allen can do, and West Virginia is adding his rare skill set to their roster in the 2018 class.

How many 6-foot-3, 280-pound high school defensive tackles can take handoffs and run 60 yards for touchdowns?

Not many. That is partly why Tyrese Allen received offers from Cincinnati, Marshall, Western Kentucky and others before committing to West Virginia on Tuesday. Even with those offers, we would still consider Allen to be in the "under-recruited" category. Some schools were concerned about his smaller-school competition, but he dominates it, and he has the physical skill set to play with the big boys.

Allen is a fantastic athlete. His workout videos are impressive, not just the ones which show brute strength either, but athletic feats and feats of flexibility as well.

On film, he shows good quickness off the snap. He has quick-twitch and shows the ability to play on the edge some even at his size. That is not likely to be where he makes his living, but impressive for a big guy to be able to do that. He runs plays down, he is violent with his hands and shows good strength. He can get high at times, but as he learns to play with lower pad level, he will really maximize that explosive power he has. He does a good job with his hands, but can continue to work on that as well.

Overall, we see him as a kid with great upside who is a workout warrior -- which sometimes means, great tester, not as great of a football player -- but he is a football player and a great athlete, so we believe his future is bright at West Virginia. He has things to work on, but from what we gather, he is a hard worker and a quick learner, so even though he may appear as a project on the surface, we think he can be a kid who plays early.

Even if he does not get on the field right away, we see him as a steal for the Mountaineers.
