Isaiah Smalls is one of the top tight ends out West and has really progressed over the last few years.
We first saw Smalls when he was just a freshman. He was a big bodied receiver at the time and showed a lot of promise and he has continued to get better and better. He has grown in to his body, added good weight while maintaining his athleticism and he has always been able to catch the ball well.
On the recruiting front, Smalls picked up an offer from the Purdue Boilermakers on Wednesday and is set to take a couple of unofficial visits over the next few weeks.
"I'll be going to Cal this weekend for their spring game," Smalls said. "Then the following weekend, I'll be at Fresno State for their spring game. Both of these schools are recruiting me hard right now, probably harder than anyone. Beau Baldwin (Cal OC) is my primary recruiter at Cal and Scott Thompson, the TE coach at Fresno State is my lead recruiter there and I like both guys a lot.
"This will be my first visits to these schools so I'm excited to go and check them out. Right now, I have no plans to make an early decision but would like to start narrowing my list down around June so these visits will be big to see how I like it out there."
With the evaluation period starting up on the 15th, there have already been several schools by the Dorsey campus.
"Arizona State, Colorado, Purdue and Utah State have all visited so far," Smalls said. "Boise State and Texas A&M both told me they'll be by and Oregon State said they'll be by May 1st. I think ASU, Boise State and Oregon State could all be close to offering and I'm going to try and visit all three schools plus Oregon, Colorado and Purdue over the spring or summer.
"I don't know if I'll be able to get out to all of those schools since that's expensive but I'm going to try and visit as many as I can. I'll for sure camp with ASU and Colorado is having a camp out here at Redlands so if I can't make it out to there, I'll just camp with them when they're down here."
