Big Ten and Big 12 programs pursuing Midwest's second-ranked safety Michael Dowell hardest

CLIFTON, Va. -- Lakewood (Ohio) St. Edward safety Michael Dowell was one of the top prospects at The Opening Washington, D.C. Regional and he spoke with Scout about his recruitment.

Michael Dowell's scholarship offer list spans across the country.

However, he is not ready to make any major decisions.

"I'm still open and considering all my options," said the 6-foot-1, 190-pound Dowell. "But I hope to narrow it to five schools before June 1.

"Michigan StateIowa State and Maryland are some of the schools that will definitely make the list. They're recruiting me hardest and I'm very comfortable around all those coaching staffs."

He gave a quick thought on each school.

Iowa State: "(Defensive backs) coach (D.K.) McDonald is a young guy and I like him," Dowell said.  "A lot of the staff is also from Cleveland, so that catches my eye."

Maryland: "I visited right before the The Opening and and really liked the facilities and coaching staff. I was able to sit down and talk with (defensive coordinator) coach (Andy) Buh  and he's a real genuine person. He's real nice and a cool guy."

Michigan State: "I like the program a lot and coach (Mike) Dantonio is also a real genuine guy. Both my brothers play and start there, too, so that also makes an impact."

Dowell hopes to make his commitment by the beginning of football season.
