Payne's mother, Selina, passed away in January after a courageous battle against breast cancer.

Now, the three-star does everything to honor his late mother.

"It's really hard watching someone go through that but all that fight that my mom went through, it just makes me even hungrier to be successful and to work harder everyday," said Payne

Payne has one offer, from BYU, as a defensive back.

"I have one offer from BYU," said Payne.  "Coach (Jernaro) Gilford, the cornerback coach, offered me and we have a pretty good relationship.  I haven't had a chance to schedule a visit to BYU but Coach Gilford and I will discuss that."

Several other schools are showing interest in Payne, including a couple that signed Cathedral teammates.

"Oregon StateWashington StateUtah and Hawaii are schools that are currently looking at me but haven't offered yet," said Payne.

Payne also has a local dream school.

"My dream school is UCLA," said Payne.  "I love to watch their games and the campus is amazing."

Payne is being recruited for both sides of the ball.

"Schools are looking at me as a dual-threat player," said Payne.  "I can play corner and I can also play receiver.  I'm really just an athlete.  I love to compete for a spot on the field."

A number of schools have already stopped by Cathedral and several more figure to make their way there.

"Utah and Hawaii came by, Nevada and San Jose State and I know Oregon State is coming," said Payne.

When the eval period ends, Payne has a plan for summer workouts.

"My plans for the summer are to continue to gain weight and maintain my speed, work on my technique and just be prepared for any possible situation for my senior season," said Payne.

And the motivation will be great for him throughout the whole process.

"I might not be the greatest athlete to a recruiter or a coach, but I work harder because my motivation is my mom and I know she is watching down on me and she is smiling because she is the reason why I do everything," said Payne.
