Florida-Based 2018 OLB Ja'Qurius Smith Will Provide Syracuse With Undeniable Passion and Effort

Scout examines the skill set of new Syracuse commit and 2018 Lakeland (Fla.) outside linebacker, Ja'Qurius Smith.

Name: Ja'Qurius Smith

Class: 2018

Position: Outside Linebacker

Height/Weight: 6-foot-2, 200 Pounds

Location/School: Lakeland (Fla.) High

Committed to: Syracuse Orangemen

Scouting Report:

Smith is a rangy outside linebacker who does a great job of reading and reacting to the football. Smith diagnoses the play, and then accelerates to initiate contact with his opponent. Impressive athlete who shows no problem operating in space, but he can continue to work on his explosiveness and change of direction.

Smith also flashes that burst of quickness when shooting out of his stance. He has to continue to dive into the weight room to pack on weight, but passes the eye test with a lengthy, well-built frame. This is a well-rounded prospect who is also confident in his ability to drop back in pass coverage.

You will not have to question Smith's motor. He does a good job of navigating from sideline-to-sideline, and shows consistent effort until the play is whistled dead. Smith is at his best when firing off the edge and putting a hat on the football. You need guys who are willing to get their nose dirty in the trenches, and Smith does exactly that.

This is a young man who is only going to get better as he hits the weight room and works on his explosiveness. Smith will be tagged as a three-star prospect in the near future.
