Matthews, a 6-foot-2, 187-pound junior safety at Jacksonville (Fla.) Ribault, is armed with additional offers from Central Michigan and Samford.
"I don't really know much about them, but I know they put people in the NFL, and that's what I'm looking for in a college I go to," Matthews said.
"For example, Justin Evans was a player I watched at MSU because he plays the same position as me."
Safeties coach Ron English is the staff member who delivered the pleasant news to Matthews, who is also inching closer to earning an offer from Georgia.
"Ron English said he wants me to be the first player from Florida to commit to Mississippi State, and to keep working hard on and off the field," Matthews said.
Matthews, who recorded four interceptions and four forced fumbles as a junior, has no leaders or visits scheduled at this time.
"I'm going to a lot of college camps, and my coach is taking some of our players to visit colleges this summer," Matthews said.
