Tyler Shough has been one of the more coveted prospects this spring and the fast-rising quarterback took a pivotal step in his recruitment over the weekend.
The three-star signal caller from Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton landed a dream offer from childhood favorite Michigan last month and head coach Jim Harbaugh certainly left a lasting impression this past weekend.
"It was a great experience to continue building that relationship with the coaches," Shough told Scout.com. "Coach Harbaugh has a great track record, but he's an even cooler guy in person when you get to talk to him. The whole experience, the whole environment in Ann Arbor was amazing because it has a small-town field, but you get a big-town vibe to it as well. Walking around the streets with coach Harbaugh, he's like a celebrity. Eating lunch with him was a cool experience.
"Mainly for me, it's about getting a chance to compete for a job and play. The big thing for me when visiting the school was checking out their academics and the support they have, and I was able to check off some of my goals there. I want to study business finance and law. I want to get into the FBI -- maybe as an agent or a lawyer -- and their business school and law school are both top-notch programs."
The Wolverines picked up a commitment from three-star quarterback Joe Milton earlier this month, but Shough said that has no effect on how he views the opportunity at Michigan.
"The coaches told me that whichever quarterback wins that starting job, they would build the offense around him," Shough said. "They love my skill set in their base style offense with what I could do. I asked them about the quarterback situation and about Joe as well because he's a freak athlete. They were going to come watch me throw in person before they offered, but coach Harbaugh watched my film and offered me. He told me he liked what he saw from the start, so that was cool to hear.
"Michigan is definitely up there for me. It was a dream school growing up. Now I'm looking at schools where I could play and get coached by some great coaches in a good system. Michigan obviously fits that along with some other schools, so it's definitely something to consider."
The spring evaluation period has been fruitful for the 6-foot-5, 195-pound Shough, with offers from the likes of Oregon State, Florida State and Louisville rolling in this month. California, Florida State and North Carolina are expected to swing through Hamilton this week before Shough heads off to Indiana for another Big Ten visit.
"I've built a great relationship with Indiana and they've been very interested," Shough said. "Their staff came over from Tennessee and they have great experience both in the NFL and in college, so I want to check that out and see what they have to offer.
"I might also visit Cal soon. It would be a great offer as well. I grew up on the West Coast watching Pac-12 football, so it'd be great. I don't know much about the new coaching staff, but I've been talking with coach (Marques) Tuiasosopo a little bit and he's going to be coming out. He's told me he's really liked me. It's a great education, obviously, with a great degree, so it would be a blessing and they'd be higher up for me."
Shough said he would like to make a college decision during the summer before his season kicks off. Last year as a junior, he completed 62 percent of his pass attempts for 2,079 yards and 27 touchdowns in 12 games.
