Top programs in the mix for nation's third-ranked ILB

SHELBY, N.C. -- Four-star inside linebacker Dax Hollifield is one of the most sought-after prospects in the country and he spoke with Scout about the latest developments in his recruitment.

Schools from coast to coast continue to pursue Dax Hollifield.

However, he has zeroed in on a small group.

"I'd say I have a top eight of North CarolinaSouth CarolinaVirginia TechStanfordNotre DameLSUFlorida State and Florida," said the 6-foot-2, 235-pound Hollifield.

"Hopefully this summer, I'll be able to cut it down to five. I'm pretty sure Virginia Tech, North Carolina and South Carolina will make it. Those schools are close to home and I like how they've recruited me. All of them have also been recruiting me since my freshman year. I'm not sure what other schools will make the list."

LSU was the Shelby standout's most recent visit.

"I really liked it a lot," Hollifeild said. "They have everything facility-wise you need down there and they're recruiting me hard. The visit definitely increased my interest in LSU. I'll probably go back for a game this fall."

"I spent the most time with (defensive coordinator) coach (Dave) Aranda and he's one of the smartest guys I've met.  He told me I'd play their Mike linebacker and that they need depth at the position. I also spent some time one-on-one with coach (Ed) Orgeron and really like his enthusiasm. He told me they don't normally recruit North Carolina unless they really want a guy."

His next trip will be to Stanford this Friday.

"It's a huge visit," Hollifield said. "I want to see what the environment is like and how things would be if I go to school there. Academics are also very important to me and I know it's a great school, so I want to learn more about the educational side.

"I've been talking to (inside linebackers) coach (Peter) Hansen and he's been telling me they also need linebackers, so I'm looking forward to seeing him. I'd also like to sit down and talk to coach (David) Shaw and get to know him."

Hollifield finished his junior campaign with 146 tackles, including 52 for loss and 18 sacks, an interception, two pass breakups, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
