The above video features junior-season highlights of 2018 offensive tackle Jake Syptak.
Syptak starts his trek today as he leaves to visit California, which he will unofficially visit Saturday before competing in the Golden Bears' linemen camp Sunday. After that, Syptak will visit Vanderbilt on Thursday, followed by Duke on June 17 and UCLA on June 22.
The 6-foot-5, 264-pound Syptak owns 12 FBS offers and seven FCS offers, all of which have come from Ivy League programs. Among his FBS offers are Bowling Green, SMU, Tulsa, North Texas, UTSA, and others.
Syptak said Cal offensive line coach Steve Greatwood will show Syptak and his father around Saturday before Syptak competes in Sunday's camp.
"Coach Greatwood came out to The Woodlands to see me play this spring," Syptak said. "We have stayed in touch and he asked if I would come to one of their camps. I'm very excited to see their campus and learn more about the school. It's a great program and school and I'd be honored to have a chance to attend there."
Linebackers coach Warren Belin recruits Syptak for Vanderbilt, while offensive line coach Marcus Johnson and offensive graduate assistant Kirk Benedict recruit him for Duke, though he's heard from several Blue Devil coaches. UCLA offensive line coach Hank Fraley recruits Syptak for the Bruins.
"Coach Belin came by to do an evaluation and has been talking to me ever since, encouraging me to come to camp," Syptak said. "Vanderbilt is another really great school, in a great conference with a short non-stop flight out of Houston, so all the pieces are there for me if I'm a good fit."
Syptak said he stays in regular contact with Johnson at Duke.
"Coach Johnson and I talk almost daily and he came out to watch me during our spring game," Syptak said. "The coaches said the entire staff has watched my film and they are very excited to have me out for camp. I can't wait to get out there and compete and also get to see the Duke campus as I've heard it's a beautiful part of the country."
Syptak has already once visited UCLA, which he checked out in April during the Bruins' spring football schedule.
The environment stood out to Syptak during that first visit and he's anxious to get back to Westwood.
"Coach Fraley and I talk regularly and I want to spend more time getting to know him and the UCLA staff," Syptak said. "I had a great first visit to L.A. and really loved the school, weather, and facilities. I'm very excited to get back out there and spend more time as my last visit was pretty short due to our schedule."
