Florida-Based ILB Ryan Smenda Finds a Home With the Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Wake Forest has scooped up a verbal commitment from Ryan Smenda, a rising senior and inside linebacker from Orange Park (Fla.) Fleming Island.

Ryan Smenda, a 2018 inside linebacker at Orange Park (Fla.) Fleming Island, is now off the market and teamed up with Wake Forest after dishing out his commitment on Monday.

Equipped with additional offers from SyracuseConnecticutTemple and South Florida among others, Smenda also made the journey up to Winston-Salem to get a taste of campus just last Thursday.

"To be recruited by so many universities is a blessing in its own," Smenda wrote on Twitter. "I am extremely thankful and blessed to have been given the opportunity so few people get the chance of experiencing.

"I couldn't be happier with my decision to continue my football and academic career at Wake Forest University!"

Smenda becomes Wake Forest's first commitment from the Sunshine State, and eighth commitment overall for the class of 2018.

This is a linebacker who does a great job of reading and reacting in the middle of the defense. Smenda fills the gaps and provides that thud when taking on the lead blocker, but then shows no problem disengaging to put a hat on the ball carrier.

Smenda is also fleet-footed for a backer of his stature. He does a nice job of dropping back and flipping his hips in coverage, but also accelerates to the ball carrier in a hurry. Smenda shows good range and gets into the flats in a hurry as well.

Smenda also wastes no time bursting out of his stance. He plays light on his feet, and does a nice job of anticipating and closing on the ball in a hurry. Smenda can continue to work on his lateral quickness, and sinking his hips when doing so, but is a pad-popping defender who does a nice job of flying from sideline to sideline.
