Maryland ATH John Metchie holds Temple, Rutgers offers; Michigan, Penn State visits coming

Saint James (Md.) High athlete John Metchie talks Big Ten offer, upcoming visits.

As schools try to decide whether John Metchie fits best as a receiver or cornerback at their school, each one may also try to convince him entering school in the 2018 class instead of 2019 is in his best interest.

It is early in Metchie's recruitment, but recent camp showings at Temple and Rutgers led to a pair of offers. He is camping at Michigan and Penn State in the coming weeks as well as his recruitment takes shape. But how quickly it comes together could provide his direction.

"I'm set on going into the '19 class," said Metchie, who plays at Saint James (Md.) High. "I guess (some schools) just want me in their system earlier."

Metchie, who is from Toronto, plays receiver and cornerback and schools are talking to him about both sides of the ball.

"Rutgers didn't really care about my testing," Metchie said. "They wanted to watch me run routes for them and see how I fit in their schemes. The coaching staff was really relatable, and they understood me really well. They liked what type of player I was, and they understood how competitive I am."

Metchie also met with the coaching staff, including coach Chris Ash.

"They walked me over the football building and then they showed me around the football facility," Metchie said. "They talked to me a lot about Rutgers, and what Rutgers has to offer me for my future. I met the head coach and a lot of assistant coaches.

"(Ash) is real cool. He's very calm. He's real charismatic. He was really straight-forward. He likes me, and he told me if he could, he would want me to play now. He explained the view he has for me in the future."

Rutgers likes Metchie as a cornerback.

"I feel 100 percent comfortable at both spots," Metchie said. "I guess if I had a preference, I like scoring so I would probably have to take receiver."

Next on Metchie's camp list are trips to Michigan and Penn State.

He plans on being at Michigan this weekend to showcase his skills.

"I've always liked Michigan," he said. "I've always seen myself fitting in there, whether it's on offense or defense. I've always liked the atmosphere at Michigan."

Metchie will be at Penn State on July 16.

"I've been in contact with them," Metchie said. "They're excited to see me in person, like Temple and Rutgers were."

Temple was the first school to offer Metchie, and it came after a strong camp showing.

"They told me they liked the confidence I play with, how athletic I was and how comfortable I felt no matter the situation," he said. "They talked about how developed my route running and basic receiving essentials were.

"The coaches were really inviting. They know how to critique things in a way to make you want to play and make you a better player. They are really welcoming."
