Breaking Down New TCU 3-Star Cornerback Pledge Eddie Smith

Scout and take a closer look at new TCU three-star cornerback pledge Eddie Smith.

The above video features junior-season highlights of 2018 cornerback Eddie Smith.

Eddie Smith, 2018 CB, Slidell (La.) Salmen

Size: 6-0, 172

Recruiting: Smith committed Friday evening to TCU, which he visited June 4 for an unofficial visit. Smith picked the Horned Frogs over the other schools in his top 10, which included Louisville, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Oregon State, Tennessee, Texas Tech, Utah, and Virginia Tech. In addition to those offers, Smith has picked up offers from Georgia, Arkansas State, Ball State, Colorado State, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Memphis, North Texas, San Diego State, Southern Miss, Troy, Tulane, UAB, ULL, ULM, UMass, and UTSA.

Rankings: Scout ranks Smith as the No. 3 cornerback in the state of Louisiana and the state's highest-ranked three-star corner. Smith is the No. 59 cornerback nationally for the 2018 recruiting cycle. He's also a top 25 overall prospect in the state of Louisiana.

2016: Smith played both sides of the ball for Slidell (La.) Salmen, where he caught 11 passes for 275 yards and five touchdowns, while recording 33 tackles, one tackle for loss, two INT's, and one defensive TD.

Evaluation notes

After examining his film and seeing him in action in-person at The Opening New Orleans in March, I have no doubt that Eddie Smith is a Power Five-caliber cornerback prospect with potential position-versatility in college.

Smith turns and locates the ball very well to make plays on the ball, regardless of where he lines up to start the play. He owns a long, wiry frame that will help him develop as a jammer at the line of scrimmage and will help him in plays in traffic. Smith shows good overall athleticism that translates to both sides of the ball for his high school team.

Improving the technical aspects of the cornerback position, such as his backpedal ability and burst when making breaks, will be key to his development at the next level. He will also need to add bulk, though he has more than enough space on his frame to do so.

Given his size relative to his projected position and his football instincts, Smith is a high-ceiling player who could really pay off down the road for the TCU staff. - Gabe Brooks
