All Poly Camp 2017: Top Defensive Performers

SANDY, Utah -- We take a look at the top defensive standouts from this year's All Poly Camp, including a pair of four-star linebackers and a rising sophomore that recently landed an offer from Alabama...

Aaron Faumui (Blair Angulo)

DT AARON FAUMUI - Kapolei, Hawaii

No one flashed a quicker first step among the defensive linemen than Faumui, who showed versatility by filling various spots along the front. The 6-foot-3, 285-pound prospect also displayed a good array of counter moves, adjusting well when offensive linemen reacted to his quickness. Faumui holds early offers from the likes of Fresno StateHawaiiUtah State and Wisconsin, with Boise State also expressing interest lately.

Junior Fehoko (Blair Angulo)

DE JUNIOR FEHOKO - Mountain View (Calif.) St. Francis

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Fehoko lined up exclusively at rush end throughout the camp and raised some eyebrows with his work there. He has some natural athleticism, having played outside linebacker and tight end in high school, and he managed to get around offensive tackles with ease while also using his length to contain the edge. Fehoko has Hawaii on his list of offers and has drawn a look from California, where he camped last week.

Jonah Welch (Blair Angulo)

DE JONAH WELCH - Honolulu (Hawaii) Kamehameha

There were several bigger defenders but there weren't many that matched Welch's relentlessness throughout camp. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound end showed a great motor and never stopped working to get into the backfield, whether it was during live periods or in one-on-one battles. Welch is up to eight offers, including Power Five member schools Syracuse and Vanderbilt.

Kana'i Mauga (Blair Angulo)

LB KANA'I MAUGA - Waianae, Hawaii

The four-star outside linebacker was unmatched from an intensity standpoint and that certainly helped his cause in the full-contact setting. Mauga fared well in pass-rushing drills against some highly regarded offensive tackles, dropped back to cover tight ends in one-on-one battles and, in the red zone 11-on-11, made several impressive tackles after quickly shedding blocks. Utah became the latest program to offer last week, joining a list that figures to expand this summer, and Mauga is set to camp with USC this coming weekend after maintaining contact with assistant coach Johnny Nansen.

Salua Masina (Blair Angulo)

LB SALUA MASINA - Salt Lake City (Utah) Brighton

The wiry linebacker is a seasoned veteran on the camp circuit and no one looked more comfortable flying around in full pads. Masina wasn't afraid to engage blockers and met every challenge with physicality, and it was that aggressiveness on a number of blitzes that earned him an MVP award. Masina told Scout.com that nearby Utah, which had a handful of reps in attendance for Saturday's scrimmage, is pushing the hardest but he just stopped by Louisville last week and is set to visit darkhorse contender Vanderbilt for the first time this Friday.

M.J. Tafisi (Blair Angulo)

LB M.J. TAFISI - Sandy (Utah) Alta

Coaches searching for a steady inside linebacker should look no further than Tafisi. The three-star prospect flew to the football, hit holes at full speed to meet blocks and ball carriers, and might have been the most reliable tackler in the event. Cal, Oregon and Utah look like the main suitors at the moment, although Tafisi told Scout.com he doesn't plan to make a decision until after his senior season.

Jakobi Matagi (Blair Angulo)

LB JAKOBI MATAGI - South Jordan (Utah) Bingham

Matagi, who rotated in at strong safety as a junior last season, made a number of heads-up plays on the perimeter when he dropped back in coverage and jumped throws for interceptions. His athleticism and instincts were on full display throughout the sessions and that versatility should make him one of the state's most intriguing prospects this fall. Dixie State and Virginia Union have offered, while some Mountain West schools, including Boise State, are said to be keeping tabs.

Noah Sewell (Blair Angulo)

LB NOAH SEWELL - St. George (Utah) Desert Hills

Sewell, a class of 2020 prospect, made headlines going into the three-day event by picking up an offer from Alabama. Despite having three years of high school football remaining, Sewell certainly flashed high upside at inside linebacker, storming to the football on inside runs and chasing down ball carriers if they broke outside. Sewell, the younger brother of Scout 300 prospect Penei, also shined on offense taking the ball out of the Wildcat formation. The Crimson Tide joined an offer list that already included Arizona State and Utah, among others.

Isaiah Tufaga (Blair Angulo)

DB ISAIAH TUFAGA - Honolulu (Hawaii) St. Louis

Tufaga played safety all weekend and handled that duty well, supporting the defense as a run stopper in the box but demonstrating good coverage ability when he had to drop back. That versatility has made him an attractive prospect for some programs and the three-star looks primed for a big senior season in search of another state championship ring. Oregon State is a big offer early on and Tufaga told Scout.com he is scheduled to camp with childhood favorite USC this weekend.

Eddie Siaumau (Blair Angulo)

DB EDDIE SIAUMAU - Pago Pago (American Samoa) Leone

Given his distance from the mainland, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Siaumau was a relative unknown heading into All Poly Camp but he quickly drew a crowd of college coaches during drills. The class of 2019 prospect looked like a carbon copy of USC incoming freshman Juliano Falaniko at the same stage and given the energy and enthusiasm he played with in the event, it's safe to assume that his recruitment will ramp up this fall. Utah, Nevada, Weber State and Oregon are some of the schools Siaumau said have expressed preliminary interest.
