Tight end/defensive end Jeff Cumberland of Columbus (Oh.) Brookhaven may have put on the most impressive performance at this year's scout.com combine in Akron, which is saying a lot considering what kind of talent was there. Cumberland clocked a 4.47 40 at 6-5, 224 pounds and put himself on the map as one of the Midwest's top athletes.
In the May issue of Ohio High, recruiting analyst Duane Long ranks Cumberland as the No. 12 prospect in Ohio.
"Cumberland is athletic and quick and has big hands and a really good frame, but he needs to add weight," Long wrote. "I think he can get to the 240-245 pound range with no impact on his speed and athleticism.
"Cumberland is a good overall athlete as he is a fine basketball player, but he understands he will be a football player on the next level. He also has good feet and runs very well... Cumberland had 19 catches last year for 375 yards and seven touchdowns in an offense that did not feature the tight end. Brookhaven enjoyed a perfect 15-0 season on its way to the Division II state title.
"This is still a very raw prospect. I think we are just now starting to see what kind of player he can be."
Today, we have a video interview with Cumberland, who lists his five favorite schools as Miami (Fla.), USC, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Minnesota. He will also camp this summer at OSU, Miami, and Michigan. To watch this video, you will need Microsoft Media Player. Click here to here download the most recent version of Media Player.
