2006 Football Preview
Class A - Region 2
brought to you by:
It won't take long for high school fans in Class A to realize some of the state's top teams make their home in Region 2. The A subregion consists of Dooly County, Hawkinsville, Irwin County, Turner County and Wilcox County, while the B subregion will be comprised of Johnson County, Montgomery County, Telfair County, Treutlen and Wheeler County.
The teams in subregion A had a combined record of 35-21 last season and three of the schools - Dooly County, Hawkinsville and Turner County - made the postseason.
Hawkinsville, after back-to-back state titles in 2003 and '04, had a rebuilding season last year but should make another deep postseason run. The Red Devils will be led by a pair of major college prospects in senior linebacker Sacoby Carter (6-1, 220) and cornerback Daquan Bembry (5-11, 175), who has verbally committed to Auburn.
Erik Soliday, entering his fifth season in his second stint as Turner County's coach, has the Rebels improving each year. Turner made the second round of the playoffs last year and should take it a step farther.
Irwin County, dropping from Class AA, and Dooly County will also be in the playoff hunt as well as Wilcox County, who just missed the playoffs in 2005.
The B subregion will be dominated by Johnson County, a state semifinalist last season who returns most of its talent. The Trojans will build around linebacker Brad Jefferson (6-0, 210), a three-star prospect by scout.com who has already committed to Georgia Tech.
The remainder of subregion B isn't as clear. Telfair County finished 4-6 last year but should make a run at the postseason. Telfair has one of the state's top offensive lineman prospects in 6-foot-7, 310-pound Tyler Bowen.
Treutlen and Wheeler County have some solid returners but not enough to put them in the playoff chase. Montgomery County is looking to improve on last year's 1-9 finish.
