For the second time in as many days, the Iowa Hawkeyes have picked up a verbal commitment. Close on the heels of the verbal by New Jersey Defensive Athlete Dezman Moses, the Hawkeyes picked up a pledge from Illinois OL/DL Adam Gettis.
After receiving his Iowa offer only two weeks ago, the 6-4, 235-pound senior felt it was time to pull the trigger and end his recruitment.
"I was pretty set on jumping on (that offer,)" Gettis said. "My parents and I talked about how we loved Iowa so much. It's not too far away from home, and it has what I want academically and sports-wise."
Gettis has been hearing from the Hawkeyes since his sophomore season, as they invited him down for a camp early in his high school career. It wasn't until after Gettis did some research that he found out Iowa was the place for him.
"They really wanted me down there, so I decided it would be the first camp I went to," Gettis said. "I researched them a little bit, and then they became my number one school.
"Academically, they have a great graduate rate. I think they're number one or two in the Big Ten. I really like that, because I'm definitely going to graduate. They have a great football program the past 4 or 5 years with Coach Ferentz. That really got me hooked to Iowa."
Gettis said he plans on majority in Sports Medicine when he arrives on campus.
Gettis said he has room to improve his size, but he also said he uses his strength and quick feet to dominate as an OL in high school
"(My) quick feet, and my strength are the main two things they liked," Gettis said. "They really liked my quickness. I do need to get a little bigger, but that'll come in time."
Gettis' team was eliminated in the state semifinals to Mt. Carmel, who just competed in the Illinois state championship.
Gettis plans to take an official visit to Iowa City on December 8th, his first visit to Iowa City in close to 6 months.
Being from Illinois, Gettis said he has played against, and spoken with several current and future Hawkeye players, including LB verbal Kevin Rouse and current LT Dace Richardson. He said, however, that they did not try to sway him one way or the other with regards to his recruitment.
Gettis is the 13th known commitment for the 2007 recruiting class, and the third from the state of Illinois, joining Kevin Rouse and Bryan Bulaga.
We'll check in with Adam after his official visit to see how he likes Iowa City now that he's a Hawkeye.
