Matthews Makes a Statement on Day One
Matthews, who measures in at a rangy 6'5 and 220 pounds, said that he is soaking up the Shrine Bowl experience this week.
"I'm loving it. I'm getting after it on defense. The offense is looking pretty good too. With some more practice, we'll be right."
One thing Matthews has noticed in the Shrine Bowl practices, which feature the best high school seniors in the states of North and South Carolina, is the level of speed across the board.
"It's a lot faster out here, but I can handle it."
The highlight of Monday morning's workout came when Matthews beat his man off the edge and laid out Clemson quarterback commitment Willy Korn for a sack. When asked about that play, a smiling Matthews replied that was just a sign of things to come.
"Oh yeah, I just gave him a little taste of what he's going to get for the next four years."
Matthews, who is firmly committed to South Carolina, said that he is learning things this week that will help him on the next level.
"I'm getting a lot of experience right now. I'm learning things just to get better for next year."
When asked what his goals are for Saturday's game, Matthews, who is fresh off leading his Cheraw team to a state championship, says that first and foremost he hopes to emerge victorious.
"My goal is to win and probably get a couple of sacks."
