A Matter Of Time For Harris?

A few weeks ago it seemed as though the Blue Devils were on the verge of picking up one of the Jacksonville combine's star running back prospects. Since that time nobody has heard anything out of the Montel Harris camp. On Sunday the 5'10, 195 pound Florida RB spoke with TDD.

"Right now Duke is my firm number one," says Jacksonville (Fla.) Trinity Catholic 's Montel Harris. "I've also got offers from Ball State and Vanderbilt and I've recently heard from some of the SEC and ACC schools."

In mid-March Harris took an unofficial visit to Duke to meet the coaches and tour the campus with his father. Before departing the Jacksonville area he confirmed that a commitment was not only not out of the question, but probable. And, the visit lived up to his expectations.

"I had a chance to sit down with Re'quan Boyette and some of the other players. I was really comfortable there and liked all the players and coaches. They all showed me around and showed me a good time."

"I also had a chance to sit down with Coach Pearman and Coach Roof. To hear the head coach tell me how much Duke really wants me to come in and play means a lot. They told me that they don't play favorites and that the best players will play no matter what year they are - so if I come in and am one of the top players, I can play as a true freshman. You can't ask for anything more than that as an opportunity."

However, when he returned home there was no commitment on the table. The reasoning was simple for both Montel and his family.

"My mom couldn't make the trip up there, and she wants to see Duke before I do anything. She really doesn't care much about the football aspect of things - if that can open the door to a great schools that's fine, but she's more concerned with education. I know she really likes everything about Duke."

With school back in session, Harris and his family were hoping to make it back to Durham this weekend, but a prior acceptance to the Nike camp has pushed the visit back at least another week.

"I'm going to camp and then we're going to try and get back to Duke as soon as possible. I would like to go ahead and commit around the time of my Spring game if possible."

Harris, who maintains a 3.4 grade point average, says he is looking forward to majoring in sociology or another field that will help him reach his professional goal of....

"I want to be an FBI agent. I've always been fascinated by that branch of law enforcement."

As the starting running back for Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville for the last two seasons, Harris has earned plenty of notoriety. He's also racked up more than 2,400 yards and two dozen touchdowns in the time, earning himself acclaim as one of the top prospects in the greater Jacksonville area.

He stands 5-foot-10 and 195 pounds, and was on hand for the Scout combine in Jacksonville. There he placed third among all prospects in the L-Cone drill with a time of 6.88. Harris also recorded a forty time of 4.54, a shuttle time of 4.44 and a standing broad jump of 9 feet, 2 inches.
