Tigers are still in it with Patchan

Standing 6-7, and weighing 263 pounds, Matt Patchan out of Tampa, Fla., is closing in on 100 offers from around the nation. He has several schools still vying for his signature and LSU is still in the mix.

At defensive end, Matt Patchan recorded 99 tackles, eight sacks, four forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries. The two-way standout earned all-state honors for his efforts on the offensive side of the ball as well and most feel that is the side he will end up on down the road.

"What makes me so good at both positions is that I play it the same way, as hard as I can," said Patchan. "I give more effort than anyone. It shows up on my tapes and highlight films where you can just see me giving it my all. Also, I'm explosive off the line and I'm the quickest off the line. I'm strong and fast and can dominate my opponents."

With so many scholarship offers to consider, somehow, Patchan has narrowed his selection to eight teams.

"Right now it's LSU, Miami, Florida State, Florida, Georgia, Auburn, Ole Miss and Notre Dame," he said. "I like the SEC and ACC because I feel like they are the two best conferences. I wanted to like USC but they play in the Pac-10 and it's just a weak conference. I mean Cal is good every now and then, but other than that it's not a strong conference. The Big-10 is just a ridiculously slow conference. They are big but slow and we saw that during the national championship last year."

Right now, the five-star offensive tackle has plans to visit his top eight schools and then narrow his list to five where he'll take his official visits.

Earlier in the summer, Patchan and his family visited LSU.

"I went at the beginning of the summer and I had a really nice time," said Patchan. "I talked with both the offensive and defensive line coaches and I got a chance to talk with coach Miles. He seemed really honest. They are really open to me playing both ways. I'd probably have to start at offensive line and then work my way onto the defensive side."

Like most big-time programs, the competition is fierce at LSU and that is what Patchan is looking for.

"They have so many good offensive lineman and defensive lineman there already," said Scout.com's No. 5 rated offensive tackle. "I know it would make me better to compete with those guys every day in practice. There is just so much talent and they have a great defensive line."

Staying close to home usually factors into the decision-making process but Patchan is dead-set on finding the best school to suit his needs.

"If the best school for me was in Alaska I'd move there and just learn to hunt polar bears," he quipped.
