Taking an Academic Focus

Pittsburgh, Pa., standout Ed Tinker is holding written scholarship offers from six schools at this point, however he has not been able to take any visits this summer due to summer courses he is taking to improve his academic standing. While most of his interest is still coming from the same schools, an SEC power has recently jumped into the mix a bit.

Last season Ed Tinker was one of the focal points for the Brashear High School offense, catching 36 passes for 516 yards and three touchdowns. While the 6-foot-1, 188-pound wide receiver does hold offers from West Virginia, Colorado, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota and Pittsburgh, he does realize that he has some unfinished business to do in the classroom and is spending his summer focusing on that.

"I am taking four classes in summer school right now and trying really hard to get my core GPA up which was a 2.4 after this year," Tinker said. "The last time I took the SAT I scored a 740 and I am planning on taking that again in September as well as the ACT test because I would really like to improve that score. Obviously the schools that have offered me are very important to me, but right now I feel my focus needs to be on my academic standing and not on visiting campuses."

At this point Tinker is planning on taking all five official visits this season and hopes to have a decision made by the conclusion of his football schedule. While he has not decided which schools will receive a visit from him, he does plan on figuring that out over the next month or so. Right now most of the interest being shown to Tinker is from programs that have already offered him, however a new school has recently taken an interest in the wide receiver.

"Alabama had been sending me a lot of handwritten letters and asked me to come down for their camp, but I couldn't make it down," Tinker stated. "They talked to Andrew Moore who is a teammate of mine recently and asked him to ask me to get in contact with them, so once I am done summer school I plan on doing that. To tell you the truth I really don't know anything about them as a school or a football program, so everything is new to me with them."

"I have also been getting a lot of handwritten letters from Colorado and think that they are recruiting me the hardest lately along with West Virginia, Michigan State and Connecticut," Tinker explained. "Connecticut says they are simply waiting to see how my grade situation pans out before offering me and I hope to get them up and grab that offer because I really liked it a lot there when I visited. The whole atmosphere on campus was really nice there and it was just very clean on campus. The program is full of great people, they have an excellent weight room, they are adding to their stadium and I just really liked the feel I got up there. The weight room is definitely one thing I cannot get out of my head because it was full of state of the art equipment that I just have never seen before."

Tinker claims a max bench press of 225 pounds, a max squat of 430 pounds and a 38-inch vertical leap. Tinker is an excellent red zone weapon, has adequate speed for the collegiate level and has displayed great hands during his high school career.
