Lawrence Enjoys Visit to Provo

Last year's Junior College Defensive Player of the Year Simoni Lawrence made his way to BYU's campus for a visit this past weekend. TBS caught with Lawrence to learn of his impressions following his visit.

"I loved it," said Simoni Lawrence regarding his visit to BYU. "It was a lot of fun. I thought it would be strict and not really fun and all that, but I had a great time. BYU is a real cool place and I really enjoyed myself while I was there."

Lawrence is a 6-foot-1-inch, 210-pound safety prospect from Valley Forge Military Academy in Pennsylvania. Coming off a year where he was named the Junior College Defensive Player of the Year, Lawrence has a whole list of potential suitors that he's trying to narrow down.

"My top three are probably Minnesota, Miami, and I'd probably put BYU right up there after my visit," said Lawrence. "[BYU's] the school I'm real high on right now since I really enjoyed my visit. I'll just have to visit the other schools and compare them with BYU."

Next up for Lawrence is a visit to Minnesota on Sept. 22, and an unscheduled trip to Miami. However, his trip this past weekend just might push him towards becoming a Cougar, as he had many positive things to say about his BYU experience.

"I pretty much did everything with the team while I was there," related Lawrence. "I watched practice, went to the team meetings and hung out with a lot of the players. I also went to the fireside they had Friday night, which was really cool."

Lawrence said he felt comfortable with the players and coaches while he was on his visit.

"I got along real well with Brandon Bradley. He's a real cool guy," said Lawrence. "Michael Reed, man, that guy was one of the funniest guys I've ever met. I loved hanging with those guys and would love to be their teammate."

Lawrence also met with most of the coaches, including a long meeting with Cougar head coach Bronco Mendenhall.

"I'm real impressed with Coach Mendenhall," said Lawrence. "He talks to you like you're a man, [and] doesn't try and tell you what you want to hear, but what you need to hear, like you're a man. I liked that."

Lawrence's visit also included a trip to downtown Salt Lake with some family members, and was capped off by attending BYU's season-opener against Arizona. He was very impressed with the defensive play of the BYU football team.

"That defense was great," said Lawrence. "They pretty much dominated the entire game. Arizona couldn't do anything against them, so yeah, I loved what I saw from their defense. I also loved being in that stadium. It was so big and the crowd was great. The whole atmosphere was good, clean and loud. I really liked it."
