Battle Pledges to Hometown Sun Devils

What a weekend it has been for Phoenix's Desert Vista Allante Battle. On Friday, his two second half touchdowns help engineer a 29-15 come from behind win over Mesa HS. Less than 24 hours later, he made his college commitment known to the Sun Devil coaches before ASU's comeback win over Colorado. Devils Digest caught up with Battle late Saturday night to discuss his decision.

"I knew for the last couple of weeks that I wanted to go to Arizona State," said the 5-9 170 Allante Battle. "So I just decided to tell (Tight Ends) Coach Cozzetto about my decision. I told him on the field before the game. He was excited, but I guess because he was on the field he couldn't get that excited (smile)…after the game I had Friday my decision was just a positive on top of another positive."

Battle had offers from Washington State, University of Washington, New Mexico State, University of New Mexico, Nevada, San Diego State, Colorado State, Utah, and Oregon State . He was also offered by ASU's archrival Arizona, and due to the fact that his brother Avory walked-on to the Wildcats, it was believed that they may be in the driver's seat for the WR's services, since they were also the first ones to offer the Desert Vista standout.

"I know he was supposed to walk-on to ASU, and I don't know why he decided to go to U of A instead," Battle remarked. "But we've always been competitive with each other and now we'll just be competitive again and talk trash when we play each other next year."

Battle admitted that playing close to home was a major factor in his decision, but there were certainly other forces that made him commit to the maroon and gold.

The wide receiver's father is Greg Battle, a former Sun Devil linebacker. "It's cool that I'm gonna go to the same school as my dad," he commented. "He was gonna support me no matter where I went, but I'm sure he's happy that I'm going to ASU."

Two of Battle's teammates, defensive lineman Zeb Togai and tight end Steven Figueroa, already pledged to ASU, and the wide receiver admitted that "it's nice to play with players you already know from high school…they were recruiting me a little to also go to ASU."

Last season he was named 1st team All-Region as a wide receiver. He caught 18 passes for 496 yards and four touchdowns. He rushed for 313 yards and five more scores on the ground.

Moreover, Battle is the reigning Class 5A-Division champion in the 100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter and he ran the anchor of the 4x400-meter relay winning team. For good measure, he set personal records in all four events, including a 10.64 in the 100-m. In the 40-yard dash he was clocked at a 4.4.

While he called his commitment "solid", he said that he's considering going on a visit to UCLA. He added that no other schools are in his visit plans.

Battle is the seventh known commitment of the 2008 recruiting class, and the sixth in-state pledge the Sun Devils have received.
