Local Cornerback Pledges to ASU

When Head Coach Dennis Erickson was hired by the Sun Devils, it was quite clear that a heavy emphasis will be put on improving the speed of the defense. They certainly don't come much faster than Deveron Carr. The Scottsdale (Ariz.) Chaparral cornerback visited ASU this weekend, and wasn't slow to make his verbal commitment. He talked Scout.com of his decision earlier today.

"I told the coaches at 12:30 that I committed," said the 6-1 185 Deveron Carr who runs a 4.34 . "I was talking to Coach Erickson and he was asking me about committing, and I committed right then. I like that ASU is close to home and I love the coaching staff. My mom was on the trip with me and she really liked it…this visit was a 10 out of 10."

As with many ASU recruits coming on official visits, Carr was deeply impressed with the academic support offered to the Sun Devil student-athletes. "I just fell in love with the academics there," he commented. "I really like what Jean Boyd does with the academics. That was a big factor in my decision."

Carr attended the Duel in the Desert last night. Arizona State offered him a couple of months ago, while Arizona extended an offer less than a week ago. The corner admitted that the game's outcome (ASU beat Arizona 20-17) did have some influence on his decision. "I really didn't like Tucson. ASU is where I should be," he stated. "My mom is really excited about the decision and we already went out and bought some ASU sweaters and T-Shirts."

Prior to their game last Friday in the 4A1 state semi-finals against rival Scottsdale Saguaro, Carr recorded 22 tackles and three interceptions for the 10-2 Firebirds. He also plays running back on offense where he averaged nearly ten yards per carry. On just 93 touches, he has gained 872 yards and scored eight touchdowns. He also has two receiving scores.

In that game against Saguaro Carr put his team ahead 6-0 with a 73-yard run, but his Firebirds were eliminated from the playoffs with a 12-6 loss.

Carr is the 14th known verbal commitment of ASU's 2008 recruiting class.
