Latest Duck Commit A Lot Like Dixon

Oregon's latest commitment could be the spitting image of one of Oregon's most exciting players ever. Quarterback Darron Thomas called Oregon Coach Mike Bellotti and committed to the Ducks according to Thomas' high school coach.

"He did commit to the Oregon Ducks today as a matter of fact," said Aldine (Houston, Texas) Head Coach Bob Jones of Darron Thomas.

Jones describes Thomas as an unbelievable player with a cannon for an arm. Thomas possesses great speed and off the field is a "tremendous student."

Many have compared Thomas to Dennis Dixon, Oregon's graduating quarterback. Jones thinks that the two players are very similar. Jones is so impressed with Thomas that he'd like his own son to be like Darron.

Thomas is finishing up high school this month and hopefully will enroll at Oregon for Winter Term and will definitely be in Eugene for spring football in April.

In high school, Thomas played on a team that ran the spread offense.

What was the major reason for committing to Oregon? According to Jones, it was Oregon's offensive coordinator Chip Kelly and head coach Mike Bellotti.

"He really likes Chip Kelly and Coach Bellotti," said Jones of Thomas.

Will it be a problem for Thomas if Oregon continues to recruit quarterbacks?

"Darron understands everywhere he goes, that there will be competition," observed Jones. "He knows that and in fact as a sophomore he played behind a great quarterback, so being in competition is nothing new to him."

When Thomas was a sophomore, Terrance Anderson, now a defensive back at Oklahoma State, was the quarterback at Aldine.

Thomas chose Oregon over LSU, Florida, Illinois, Missouri, Northwestern and Oklahoma State.
