Melvin Ray
6-4, 204, WR
North Florida Christian (Tallahassee, Fla.) (12-2) State Championship Runner-Up
Scout.com four-star recruit

Why Alabama?: "I know coach Saban is a winner. I love the atmosphere, the fans and the stadium. Everyone loves it there. Everything is first class," Ray said.

On Coach Nick Saban as a recruiter: "He is great. He came down to speak to my family and I. He is very good at recruiting. He knows what he is talking about. He gets you pumped up. He knows all the great things to tell you. He doesn't beat around the bush. He tells you the truth."

Coach Tim Cokeley: "His speed [Ray's strength]. He's a big, tall, fast receiver. He's an engaging person. He is a high character guy."

"He's a very hard worker, good kid. He's a leader on campus. He's just a natural leader."

"I'm sure he's going to be their [Alabama] speed wideout that plays on the outside. The guy that plays on the outside, the guy they like to get deep."

"Melvin's maturity is going to let him come in and compete for playing time as a freshman, if he stays healthy."

"In my experience, and I've done this a long time. My experience is that it comes down to how a kid prepares his legs in the summer, and his maturity level. It's so different if you don't have some maturity. It's harder to get on the field, but Melvin's maturity is really going to help him."

"He is a good teammate, and I think if he stays healthy I think he will play this fall."

Bio: One of the state's top wide receiver prospects, Ray has only been playing football for two seasons. Ray recorded 58 catches, 1,300 yards and 16 touchdowns during his senior season. 2007 Awards: Ray was voted All-State first team by the FSWA at wide receiver for the 1A class. All Big Bend Team (all classes), and named by the Tallahassee Democrat first team wide receiver.

Analysis: Ray is a bigger receiver who runs great routes. He is physical and great in the air. Ray shows excellent concentration and body control. He has good speed and better quickness. Ray can make you miss in the open field, run with some power and run by you. He also will catch in traffic and go over the middle. Ray also excels in returning punts and kickoffs.
