Combine standout getting offers

Gabe Holmes has only been playing football for two years and the Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas standout is quickly emerging into one of the top tight end prospects in the state of Florida. He had an impressive showing on Saturday's Under Armour/ Combine in Miami.

"I had a real good time out there yesterday," Gabe Holmes said. "That was my first time doing a lot of that stuff and I thought I did pretty well. There were a lot of good players there."

Holmes, who checked in at 6-foot-5 and 206 pounds, clocked a 4.8 in the 40 and jumped 34 1/2 inches on the vertical.

"Coaches say they like my athletic ability for my size," he said. "I'm used to playing basketball and I have a pretty good vertical for my size."

Holmes has already landed four scholarship offers and that number will likely go way up in the spring when college coaches visit him at the school.

"I have offers from South Florida, FIU, Ole Miss, and Syracuse," he said. "Virginia will be offering soon. UCF told me I'm the number one tight end on their board so I think they'll offer. I'm also talking to Coach Heavesy at Florida and Coach Stoutland at Miami. They keep me posted on what's going on."

The talented tight end was asked for his current list of favorites.

"Virginia's at the top," he said. "I was talking to their coach and he was telling me how they are the number one school in the nation as far as throwing to the tight end. They just lost a guy to the draft so they'll need some more guys to come in and play. I've always liked Florida and I also like schools like UM and Louisville."

Holmes was asked about some things he'll be looking for in a school.

"I wanna be where they throw to the tight end a lot," he said. "And I'd like to stay somewhat close because I don't wanna play in the cold too much."

Inside the classroom, Holmes carries a 2.6 GPA and he hasn't taken the test yet.
