The Hot 20 list debuted last Tuesday and not one linebacker made the list. One linebacker that will get serious consideration for the next edition will be Daniel Mack from Dade Christian high school.
"I actually just got off the phone with Coach (Larry) Scott, an offer from USF is in the mail."
As a junior Mack recorded 128 tackles, eight sacks and two interceptions on defense. He also had 300 yards rushing and nine total offensive touchdowns and was named All-Dade County and All-State. On May 19th Mack's Dade Christian played Dovall Academy in their annual spring game and he racked up 13 tackles on defense and rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown on offense.
"I feel like I had a good game." Adding, "I had a bunch of tackles, but more importantly I didn't miss on any."
All together Mack has 24 offers from schools like South Florida, Rutgers, Central Florida, Boston College, Colorado State, Clemson, South Carolina, Wake Forest and West Virginia to name a few. With all those offers Daniel says he won't be able to narrow down a top 5 till August.
When asked if South Florida is in the mix Mack had this to say:
"Even though I don't have a favorite, USF is real high in my mind right now."
"I watched them last year and I liked the spread offense they run with Grothe and they have a bunch of young running backs that can all go for big yards. They've only been around for 11 years and they were all the way up to number two in the country last year, you can't beat that."
The Bulls offered the 6-foot, 196 pound Mack as a linebacker and he says that's fine with him.
"I'll play wherever coaches want me to play. I can play linebacker, strong safety or wherever they need me."
Mack says he talks with Coach Scott quite frequently and has developed a strong relationship with the South Florida coach.
"He's real down to earth, he's real live and he recruits differently from the rest of the big schools. The big schools will say the name of their program and that's it. Coach Scott will be real, give you the X's and O's, he's gonna give you the truth every time – he's real upfront with everything."
On the field Mack brings not only physical ability, he brings knowledge, something all middle linebackers need to succeed on the next level and beyond.
"My biggest strength as a defender is my ability to pick up an offense. You can't do anything against me twice. If a play works once, I'll pick it up the next time and stop it. I play with a lot of speed and passion."
Off the field Daniel has a 2.65 core GPA and is taking his SAT on June 7th. This summer he'll take an English and Economics class, making him eligible to graduate in December of his senior year. Besides taking classes this summer Mack says he plans on visiting a number of schools.
"I'm going to USF's camp in June. I'll also visit UCF, Boston College, Clemson, WVU, Rutgers and possibly three more. It will be a busy summer!"
Stick with USFNation for the latest on linebacker prospect Daniel Mack.
