Schofield Gets the Call

The May evaluation period has come and gone and the Irish coaching staff has found yet another group of talented prospects they'd like to add to the roster in 2009. One such player is offensive tackle Michael Schofield, who was recently offered by the Notre Dame coaching staff.

Orland Park, Ill. native Michael Schofield grew up knowing the name Notre Dame, so when he received a message to call the Irish coaching staff, that message was pretty special to Schofield.

"I was pretty excited," Schofield said of finding out he'd been offered by Notre Dame. "My great grandpa was the biggest Notre Dame fan ever. If he were still alive he'd be pushing me hard to go there. He loved Notre Dame."

Not only did his great grandfather love Notre Dame, but other members of his family also have a fondness for the Irish.

"My dad also likes Notre Dame," he added. "My whole family is excited about it. It's Notre Dame. It's tradition. They have a huge tradition there."

And Schofield himself admitted he also is impressed with the Irish.

"I've been to a lot of places," he explained. "I've been to Illinois, Iowa, Northwestern, Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana and Ohio State. Notre Dame was the most amazing campus I've seen. There's something unique about it. It really is a beautiful place. I really liked it when I was there. I liked other places a well."

The Carl Sandburg high school star said he spoke with a number of Notre Dame coaches the day he was offered.

"At first I spoke with coach Ianello—my recruiting coach. He then handed it over to coach Weis and we talked for awhile. I also spoke with the offensive line coach, (coach) Latina. They just told me that they were offering me a scholarship. They didn't really say if they liked me at right or left tackle. They just said tackle, which is what I want to play."

With this latest offer, his 17th thus far, Schofield says he'll likely visit Notre Dame in the near future.

"I need to talk it over with my parents but I'll probably visit Notre Dame real soon, definitely sometime in June," he said. "It's only and hour and a half away, so it's easy for me to get there. I just want to take a better look at the place, meet with the academic people, get to know some of the coaches better. I just want a better feel for the place."

With offers from a lot of teams in the Big 10 like Michigan, Penn State, Indiana, Iowa, and teams like Boston College and Notre Dame, Schofield has plenty of options at this point and plans to make an early decision.

"I'd like to make my decision sometime in August," he said. "I'm going to narrow my list down in June and try to come up with a decision by August.

"I think education is really going to be important to me because that's the whole reason you're going to college. I just want to find a place where I feel the most comfortable. Hopefully I'll know where that is by August."

Note: Irish Eyes has learned that Schofield plans to visit Notre Dame on Wednesday, June 4. We'll follow up with the Orland Park, Ill. native once he returns from his visit to South Bend.
